ATENEO BASKETBALL LEAGUE
  ABL 2017 SEASON IN REVIEW
By Chiqui Paterno

Highlights of the 17th season of the ABL.

AT SEVENTEEN
League pioneers Teams Cacho and Magpale participated in their 17th ABL season without a miss.

STILL SWEET AT SIXTEEN
League pioneer, Team Gaston played in their 16th ABL season. Teams Gamboa and York who debuted in the ABL’s 2nd season in 2002 played in their 16th consecutive ABL season.

FIRST TIME AT FIFTEEN
AHS 90, formerly Team Xerez-Burgos, played in their first ABL final since they debuted in 2003.

FIRST TO 11
Team Gamboa became the first team to play in 11 ABL championship matches.

9 TO 5 AND 8 IS GREAT
Team Bayot won their league-leading 9th ABL championship and became the first team to win an ABL championship in five straight seasons. They also added to their record of most consecutive finals appearances which now stands at 8 straight season.

BEST. GRADE SCHOOL FINALS, EVER,
It may arguably even be the best ABL finals game ever. Team Sailani outlasted Team Miraflores in a double overtime thriller. This marked only the second time in ABL history that an ABL finals went into double overtime.

A WIN FOR THE AGES
Team Tan, the oldest team in the ABL with an average of 50+ and whose youngest player is 48 years old, won the Andres Francisco Division in a classic overtime game.

SUPER SEMIS 1-2-3
Arguably, the three best semis matches this year. 5th seeded Team Hizon upsets the 1st seed of the AHS 2007-2009 Division in a 2 point thriller. AGS 85 clinches a AHS 80s Division finals slot in overtime. AHS 4N 14 ekes out a 1 point win to get into the Fr. Dacanay Division finals.

BEST ELIMINATION ROUND FINAL DAY
The Fr. Candelaria Division had four teams tied at 2-1 playing one another on the final day of the elimination round with the teams were vying for one finals slot and two semis slots. The balance of the four teams really came to the fore with the margins of victory for the two games at 2 and 4 points only.

FIRST TO 20
Mon Tioseco became the first ABL player to win 20 MVP awards. No other player has won at least 10 MVP awards.

7,000 MARKERS
Mon Tioseco became the first player to score 7,000 points in the ABL.

400 SWATS
Carlo Poblete became the all-time leader in blocks this year by becoming the first to break the 400 barrier.

CLOSEST ALL-TIME CATEGORY LEADER RACES I
Paul Sorongon and Manu Inigo are currently 1st and 2nd in the highest points per game average and are separated by 0.05 points per game. Both have played 37 ABL games in their careers with Paul outscoring Manu by two points, 1,016 to 1,014.

CLOSEST ALL-TIME CATEGORY LEADER RACES II
Chiqui Reyes passed Manong Cruz, the leader after the 2016 season, for most steals in an ABL career. With only 5 steals separating them (557 for Chiqui and 552 for Manong), expect some more lead changes between the two over the coming years.

The official tally for the 2017 season was 172 teams in 33 divisions.

The alumni sector still accounts for the most teams and divisions with 103 and 17 respectively. This year, batches AHS 1980s, 1991-1992, 1992, 2002-2003, 2005, and 2007-2009 formed divisions made up primarily of their batchmates from grade school, high school, and college.

The student sectors drew the following number of teams and divisions- grade school- 17 and 4, high school 20 and 5, LS- 10 and 2, and Law School- 5 teams. The parents of students and alumni had 12 teams in 3 divisions while the employees had 5 teams in the AHS Brotherhood Cup.
