FINAL EXTENSION

The deadline for the settlement of tournament fees has been extended to Monday, December 3. This extension is only being granted since the inclusion of some teams will allow for more balanced divisions.

For the unpaid teams, may we request that if you have not yet done so, please send an email to confirm if your team will or won’t join ABL 2008 anymore before the end of the week. Please be advised that even if you settle your fees on or before the final extension, the acceptance of your team for ABL 2008 is still conditional. If your inclusion will result in an unbalanced division (s), the ABL reserves the right to refund your tournament fee.

While the deadline has been set at December 3, we urge teams to settle as soon as possible since priority for inclusion will be given to teams based on what date they settle their fees from now until December 3.

The ABL would also like to advise all teams that as a general policy, the ADMU will not refund any tournament fee for any team that has been classified into a division if for one reason or another, the team is not fully satisfied with their division placement.

DIVISIONS AND ROSTERS

We will be releasing via email in the next week or so the tentative divisions and initial rosters of teams based on the g.a. and the review conducted by the ABL. Over the next 1 to 2 weeks, the ABL will be calling teams to ascertain their roster strengths and status. A second recommended division set-up which will include only the officially confirmed ABL 2008 teams will also be released shortly before the recall g.a. on December 8.

As a general advisory, for old teams that have added new players of considerable strength, we strongly recommend that you ascertain the commitment of these players to your teams from now until the recall g.a. As you may know, your division classification may be affected by the inclusion of said players in your roster. If these players back out of your team after the recall g.a., your team will not be reclassified.

RECALL G.A.: Saturday, December 8, 3:00 PM at 2/f of Blue Eagle Gym

There will be a recall g.a. on Saturday, December 8 at 3:00 p.m. at the 2/f of the Blue Eagle Gym. This will only be for divisions whose recommended composition will change from what was initially set during the November 17 g.a. Please note that the ABL’s recommended division set-up is not final and can be changed during the recall g.a.

FINAL G.A.: Saturday, January 5, 2008 at 3:00 PM at 2/f of Blue Eagle Gym

The final g.a. will be on Saturday, January 5 at 3:00 p.m. at the 2/F of Blue Eagle Gym.

LATE PAYMENT OF ABL 2008 FEES
------------------------------
The Office of University Development and Alumni Relations (2/F Xavier Hall) will continue to accept late payments for the ABL 2008 tournament fee until 5:00 p.m. Friday, November 16 under the following conditions:

1) The teams that settled by the original deadline of November 8 will be given priority over late-paying teams in terms of selecting what divisions they will be playing in. Likewise, teams who settle earlier from this point forward will be given priority over those that settle later. However, please note that the ABL has the final approval on how teams will be grouped.

2) Teams that settled by the deadline will be given preferential schedules over late-paying teams.

3) While every effort will be made to accommodate all late-paying teams, a situation may arise where the inclusion of a late paying team will result in an uneven number of teams or an unfavorable division set up. If this occurs, the ABL reserves the right to remove the late paying team from ABL 2008 and refund the tournament fee that they paid.

Only teams that have fully settled their tournament fee will be classified into divisions.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY
=============
There will be a general assembly for all ABL 2008 teams on Saturday, November 17 at 3:00 p.m. at the 2nd floor of the Blue Eagle Gym at the area beside the University Athletics Office. The agenda for the general assembly will include the following:

Updating of changes in initial rosters
------------------------
Teams with changes in the initial roster they submitted should indicate them on their posted roster prior to the grouping of teams into divisions. After the general assembly, all roster changes must be approved by the ABL who will sometimes require the unanimous approval of the other teams in the divisions for any roster changes. The rosters of all teams will be finalized by January 5, 2007, the 2nd general assembly for ABL 2008.

Grouping of teams into divisions
--------------------------
Teams will be grouped into divisions based on the following criteria: a) general age of the team, b) relative strength of the team, and c) record of the team in ABL 2007. ONLY TEAMS THAT HAVE FULLY SETTLED THEIR TOURNAMENT FEES BY FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 16 WILL BE CLASSIFIED INTO DIVISIONS. For the most part, the teams will decide their groupings. However, the ABL will have the final approval authority on how the teams will be grouped.

Setting of specialized guidelines for the division
-------------------------
The teams will determine guidelines like minimum playing time or age requirements, acceptance or non-acceptance of certain players (i.e. ex-PBA, ex or current UAAP). The ABL must approve the special guidelines set forth by the division.

All teams should send at least one representative to the general assembly.

ATENEO BASKETBALL LEAGUE 2007 SEASON IN REVIEW
by Jun Dalandan and Chiqui Paterno

On sheer numbers alone, the 2007 season was another rousing success. 204 teams grouped in 29 divisions, both ABL records, participated this season. As in previous years, the sector with the most teams was the alumni who accounted for 131 teams.

What is perhaps more impressive this season was the increase in the number of teams in the different sectors. There were 18 grade school, 8 high school, 28 college, 8 law school, 6 employees, and 5 women. All of these represented an increase from 2006.

Of the 29 divisions, 3 were for grade school teams, 1 high school, 4 college, 1 law school, 1 employee, and 1 women. With the increase of participants from 80 in 2006 to 229 this season, the grade school students were divided into three divisions based on age; Fr. Giron (prep to grade 2), Fr. Malasmas (grade 3 to 4) and Fr. Katigbak (grade 5 to 7). The required playing time for all players was increased as teams had 12 to 13 players at the most. A similar system was applied to the first all high-school student division (Fr. Ampil) and the employees division (Fr. Cruz).

Continuing its thrust to unite the entire Ateneo community, the ABL was able to expand its reach to the law school. The annual inter-barkadahan tournament of the Law School was integrated into the ABL system this year.

With the increase in teams, a new venue for the ABL closing dinner had to be found. This year, the ABL fellowship dinner was held on the road directly under the blue eagle emblem of the Blue Eagle Gym facing Katipunan. It was perhaps fitting that the showcase of the ABL’s sense of community was held under its most recognizable symbol and in an area for the entire world to see. In all likelihood, this will remain the permanent venue for the ABL fellowship dinner for years to come.

As we look forward to the 2008 season, perhaps one thing to note is that this season’s growth of 53 teams was the largest in the ABL history. The fact that this growth occurred on our 7th season means that the ABL shows no signs of slowing down as it continues its vision mission: One League, One Ateneo.

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

  • AT LONG LAST: Several long-time ABL teams won their first ABL titles this season- From ABL 2001- Bunuan, Dumlao; ABL 2003- AHS 4J 00, Abaoag, Dichaves, Macayan; ABL 2004- Gepuela, Rillo. Except for Bunuan, this was also the first trip to an ABL finals for these teams. The following runner-up teams also played in their first ABL finals this season: York (ABL 2002), Perez (ABL 2003).
  • OVERALL BALANCE: There was a general balance among all the divisions this season. While there were some undefeated teams this season, none of them completely dominated their division as all had some games go down the wire this season. Four previously undefeated teams were defeated in the finals.
  • 1-1 X 8: After two games of the season, the 8 teams of the Dionisio Calvo Division all had 1-1 records, the only time this has happened in ABL history.
  • 50-50: On February 11, the match between Daez-Corpus and Bengzon sees two players, Eric Reyes of Daez-Corpus and Patrick Tolentino of Bengzon post scores of 51 and 50 points respectively. This marks the only time in ABL history that two players go over 50 points in the same game.
  • MOST-BALANCED 8-TEAM DIVISION EVER: The Oscar Sevilla Division was made up mostly of alumni from HS 89-93. In one weekend, the margins of victory for four games were 4, 2, 1 and 1. Heading into the final day of eliminations, 7 of the 8 teams were still in the running. The only team eliminated, Team Magpale fell short due to quotient. It would finish 3-4, with 2 wins coming against the top two seeds. The top seed is at 5-2, the 2nd to 4th are at 4-3, 5th to 7th are at 3-4. The 8th team finishes at 2-5 only because it loses to eventual champion, Team Dumlao by 2 points in its last game, a win Dumlao needed to advance to the semis. The third seeded team, De Guia, qualifies on the final day as it defeats Rosal in OT. The 3rd seed and 4th seeded teams defeat the higher seeds in the semis. Dumlao becomes only one of five 4th seeded teams to win a title.
  • DYNASTY I: Team Santos becomes the first ABL team to win 4 titles and the first to do it in 4 consecutive season.
  • DYNASTY II: AGSB becomes the second ABL team to win 3 titles in 3 consecutive years.
  • DYNASTY III: AHS of the Fr. Cruz Division wins its second consecutive title by going undefeated, duplicating Team Paredes’s feat in 2003-2004. The AHS also becomes the 2nd ABL team to have 5 players in the Mythical , duplicating the feat first achieved by Team Cleofas of the Sevilla Division in 2006.
  • TEAM OF DESTINY I: 4th seeded Team Ladaw of the Primitivo Martinez Division wins its semifinal game by 1 point as 1st seed Escaler misses its last shot. It wins its final match against 2nd seed Tempongko by 1 point in OT.
  • TEAM OF DESTINY II: Team Singson finished as the 3rd seed of the Fr. Teri Katigbak Division with a 1-2 record. It then went on to beat a no. 2 seed and two no. 1 seeds, including unbeaten Team Valdez by 1 point. It became only the 2nd team to win an ABL championship (Rabat in Verona 2004 was the first) to win a title after finishing the pre-knockout rounds with a losing record.
  • BEST SEMIS EVER: The Dodie Agcaoili Division saw 3rd seed Bunuan and 4th seed Manabat defeat the two higher seeds both on last second shots as time expires. Jun Inocentes tips in a shot as Bunuan defeats Chuatico. Mark Katigbak nails a 3 pointer to push Manabat over Reilly after trailing by 14 after 3 quarters.
  • DRAMATIC SHOTS I: Team Ong defeats Team Eliazo 68-66 in the Fr. Rolly Bonoan semifinals with a 3 point shot with 0.2 seconds to go.
  • DRAMATIC SHOTS II: Agruably, the most dramatic shot in an ABL final. Paulo Tatad follows up an airball with an acrobatic reverse lay up as time expires to send the Ignacio Ramos final into OT. The shot allows Team Gepuela to keep its perfect record and win the title in OT versus Team Novales.
  • PRESENT STAR: UAAP player, Treena Limgenco continues her dominance of the Women’s division. In two years, she has won both MVP and Best Defensive Player awards. This year, she establishes the single game SP record of 114 SPs (47 pts, 16 rebs, 8 ass, 4 stls) vs. WBC 2 on February 17, 2007.
  • FUTURE STAR: Grade 2 student, Jolo Mendoza dominates the Fr. Giron Division. He scores 36.2 ppg, more that the total output of 3 of the teams in the division. He scores 42 in the final, the most by any player in ABL finals history.

BASIC TIEBREAKER

As per ABL guidelines, the first applicable tiebreaker is always winner over the other. If this is not applicable (i.e. if triple tie and no team beat all the teams it is tied with), the quotient system is applied. The quotient system is the sum of the winning and losing margins of the teams who are tied against one another.

For more information, log on to www.abl.ph and download the ABL guidelines under the Downloads section.

CALVO DIVISION

After the first 2 games of the season, all 8 teams of the 2007 Dionisio Calvo Divisions have identical 1-1 records. This is the first and only time this has happened in ABL history. Although no official records are kept, last weekend was also probably the only time in ABL history when the 4 teams that lost the previous week, all won the next.

UNIFORM ADVISORY

All uniforms ordered last year are expected to be in by Friday, January 26. As of now, most have already been delivered. Please check with Pinky at 426-6001 loc. 4181 to verify if your uniform order has been delivered. If not, please contact Jeng at 426-6001 loc. 4083.

Hence, please note that only the teams listed below will be allowed to wear incomplete or provisional uniforms. All others must claim their uniforms at the Ateneo (Blue Eagle Gym) on or before their games this week.

EXEMPTED TEAMS: AHS UAAP, all college divisions (college teams playing in the ABL alumni batch or open divisions are not exempt)

As previously advised, all teams are required to be in full ABL uniforms, except those granted exemptions. The teams that are exempted are those that placed an order in December (listed below) whose uniforms have not yet been delivered. The orders placed in January are considered late and will not be granted exemptions.

As per the advice of the suppliers, some uniforms will be delivered this Friday afternoon while others will be delivered by tomorrow morning to the Blue Eagle Gym. Please check with Pinky at 426-6001 loc. 4181 prior to going to Ateneo.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS OFFICE IS ONLY OPEN UNTIL 12:00PM ON
SATURDAYS.

TEAMS WHO MAY WEAR PROVISIONAL UNIFORMS THIS WEEKEND IN CASE UNIFORMS ARE NOT YET DELIVERED BY THIS WEEKEND

1. Puyat (Vasquez)
2. Santos (Ouano)
3. Paculan (Roco)

14. Yuseco (Vasquez)
15. Enatsu (Narvasa)
16. UAAP HS- being an official Ateneo team, the team will be allowed to use their team uniforms throughout the season.

If players whose teams have not been given exemptions are inadvertently allowed by the officials, please call the attention of the officials immediately so the necessary rules can be enforced. Please note however, that no game results will be overturned because an individual from one team got to play through a game not wearing the official ABL uniform without being prevented by the officials.

Prior to going to the Blue Eagle Gym, we request all players with orders to do the following:

1. Call Pinky of the UAO at 426-6001 loc. 4181 to verify if your uniform order has already been delivered. Some late orders may not make it as part of the batch to be delivered on Thursday morning.

2. If your orders are there, you may pick them up at the 2/F Blue Eagle Gym on weekdays from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and on Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Look for Pinky Rosana.

3. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE UNIFORMS WILL NOT BE DELIVERED TO THE VENUE OF YOUR GAMES.

4. Additional uniform orders cannot be placed with UAO. They must be placed through the OUDAR, Room 213, Xavier Hall, Loyola Schools. Look for Jeng, tel. no. 426-6001 loc. 4083.

5. If your orders have not yet been delivered, please follow up with Jeng at 426-6001 loc. 4083.
